Description

AARP Tax Aide is back! Like last year, it is open not just to senior adults, but any adults needing to file their taxes. Registration is required. Please call 832-559-4200 to book a time slot (times available may vary).


Additional Information:

  • Please arrive 30 minutes early to fill out the required paperwork. (Required paperwork can also be picked up at the library’s service counter prior to appointment day.)
  • Required documents (most common)
    • Social security cards, or ITINs, for yourself, your spouse, and your dependents.
    • Valid picture ID with current address for yourself and your spouse.
    • IRS letter with PIN, if applicable. (New PIN issued in January every year.)
    • Copy of last year’s income tax return statement.
    • All income tax statements (wages, social security, interest/dividend income, IRA distributions,
      brokerage statements, unemployment compensation).
    • If self-employed, all income and business-related expenses. Bring 1099-NEC, 1099-K, and cash
      receipts. Bring all mileage driven with personal vehicle – business, commuting, and personal
      miles.
    • Educational expenses – Form 1098-T with student’s detailed financial school account plus list of
      other qualified education expenses. Form 1098-E for student loan interest paid.
    • Documentation for deductible expenses (mortgage interest, real estate taxes paid, medical
      expenses, sales tax you paid for a new vehicle in 2024, charitable donations, mileage for doctor
      visits or volunteer work).
    • Documentation for items qualifying for credit (child-care, post-secondary education, home
      purchase contract and closing statement for home purchased in 2024).
    • If medical insurance via Marketplace, Form 1095-A.
    • Estimated federal taxes paid during 2024.
    • Copy of checking or savings account info for direct deposit of refund or direct debit of balance
      due.
    • Any other tax statements not listed here.

If married, both spouses must sign the return.

Out of scope (most common)

  • Married Filing Separately (due to Texas being a community property state)
  • Self-employed with employees, business losses, business use of home, or other complicating
    factors.
  • State Income Tax Returns
  • Active-Duty Military (due to special tax situations and benefits)
  • Hobby income or other activities not for profit
  • Income from rental property (other than oil & gas leases)
  • Bartering or digital assets (virtual currencies or NFTs)
