Step inside the strange and wondrous world of revered film and television director David Lynch (1946-2025). His unique style is inimitable, but anyone who tries will have their work called "Lynchian." Fans of Lynch endlessly search for the true meaning of his work, but he has always strongly refused to give explanations, allowing it to be open to interpretation. The main thread in his work is an evil lying just below the surface, usually represented by a dark and persistent electrical hum. But unlike many film directors who dwell only in the darkness, Lynch understood how to balance the dark with lighthearted comedy.
I am happy to have lived at the same time as a truly original American artist who was unafraid to portray the uglier side of life and captured our darkest dreams on film.

Made lovingly over many years by director David Lynch and close collaborators, there is truly nothing else out there quite like Eraserhead. Lynch has called it his "most spiritual film." We are dropped into a world without color, full of dread and grotesque imagery. Show up out of curiosity for how Lynch created the mysterious baby and hang around to hear the Lady in the Radiator Song.

The Elephant Man is a very touching and melancholy film based on a true story, with amazing acting by leads John Hurt and Anthony Hopkins. This film stands out as probably one of the most straightforward narratives that David Lynch ever directed, but it's got Lynch's unique style and sound design all over it. Comedian Mel Brooks actually produced The Elephant Man, but he didn't give himself credit so that no one would misunderstand the seriousness of the film.

David Lynch's Dune is probably equally beloved and reviled by fans of the Dune book series. For fans of David Lynch there is a lot of amazing practical effects and imagery to enjoy. There is even a cameo by David Lynch! I have to say that I enjoyed this film a lot more after watching the Dune movie released in 2021. It is hard to follow otherwise, there is not a lot of time dedicated to explaining the plot. His first and only big budget movie, this is definitely not one of Lynch's best, but a fun watch for fans of his work!

According to legend, actor Dennis Hopper practically begged to play the role of Frank Booth, the depraved drug addict and dealer at the heart of the mysterious drama of Blue Velvet. Traditional americana imagery clashes against the darkness lying under the surface of a seemingly idyllic small town. Excellent performances by leads Kyle MacLachlan, Laura Dern, and Isabella Rossellini ground this violent and nightmarish film.

Who doesn't love Nicolas Cage? He and Laura Dern heat up the screen in this melodramatic, road film about a man trying to outrun his past and settle down, and the woman who loves him. There are a lot of Wizard of Oz references in this film and a couple of famous witches make appearances. Laura Dern's actual mother, Diane Ladd, plays her mother in the film and turns in a tremendous and over-the-top performance.

The television series Twins Peaks is probably how most people have heard of David Lynch. It's a soap opera and a murder mystery drama that asks the question "Who killed Laura Palmer?" The first season of the show was a huge hit and made actor Kyle MacLachlan into a star. The second season is generally considered a failure largely due to the lack of involvement by creators David Lynch and Mark Frost. I consider it all great television, but only if you understand going in that Twin Peaks is going to leave you with more questions than answers.

In David Lynch's movie follow up to Twin Peaks, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, we go back to the weeks leading up to Laura Palmer's death, the catalyst to all of the events of the television show. This might be my favorite of any of Lynch's films, but it is not an easy watch. It is very difficult to watch the things that happened to Laura Palmer leading up to her death. But we also get a lot of glimpses behind the curtain and into the mysterious and frightening world of the Black Lodge.

The third and final season of Twin Peaks is probably not going to answer any of the questions that you had from the first two seasons and may frustrate fans of the show who are expecting to see a return to Twin Peaks with all their favorite characters from the first two seasons. David Lynch directed every episode and, in my opinion, it is a true gift to all of us who are fans of his work. Parts are so wildly silly and other parts are dark and mean, a perfect example of the delicate balance that he creates and shares in all of his work.
